Ten years ago, Caramel Connections Foundation was founded by Elizabeth Pinder-McSwain and her family after discovering the power of cooking as a tool for connection. When her son, Alex McSwain, was a young child and struggled with shyness, the kitchen became a space where he could build confidence, communicate, and connect with others. That experience shaped Elizabeth’s belief that food is not only nourishment, but a pathway to connection, learning, and belonging. Over the past decade, that belief has evolved into a broader movement centered on community wellness, education, and empowerment. Today, Caramel Connections Foundation connects residents across San Bernardino County and the Inland Empire through gardening, nutrition education, youth leadership programs, community celebrations, and wellness initiatives that nourish both individuals and neighborhoods.
As we celebrate, we reflect on the journey from food access and nutrition education to building a community rooted in health, knowledge, and connection.
Seeds of Joy Community Garden. Growing Into Its 5th Year!
Now entering its 5th year, the Seeds of Joy Community Garden represents the natural evolution of the foundation’s work.
What began as conversations around healthy cooking and nutrition expanded into a deeper question: What if families could also learn to grow the food they cook and eat?
The Seeds of Joy Community Garden was created to answer that question.
Today the garden serves as a living classroom, gathering space, and hub for food education where community members can learn:
- Organic gardening practices
- Sustainable growing methods
- Environmental stewardship
- The value of fresh, locally grown food
The garden also produces fresh fruits and vegetables that are shared with residents experiencing food insecurity throughout San Bernardino County and the Inland Empire.
What started as a focus on healthy cooking has now grown into a program where community members can experience the entire food journey—from soil to plate.
But perhaps the most powerful harvest from Seeds of Joy is something less tangible: connection, confidence, and community pride.
Earth2Fork: From Garden to Table
The foundation’s Earth2Fork Program reflects the heart of this evolution.
Originally rooted in nutrition education and healthy cooking, the program now connects the entire food system—teaching participants how food is grown, prepared, and shared within community.
Through Earth2Fork, families gain the knowledge and confidence to make healthier choices while also understanding the deeper relationship between food, health, and sustainability.
The program includes:
Gardening Club
The Gardening Club offers hands-on gardening experiences and sustainability workshops, where participants learn planting, harvesting, composting, and environmentally responsible growing practices.
Cooking & Nutrition Education
The program continues its original mission through Saturday morning talks and cooking demonstrations, where families learn how to prepare healthy, affordable meals using fresh ingredients.
Participants develop practical skills for:
- Preparing nutritious meals
- Understanding nutrition
- Stretching food budgets
- Cooking together as families
What began as cooking education has now expanded into a holistic food education model that empowers families from seed to plate.
TWIGS Youth Gardening & Healthy Eating Training
As the organization’s work expanded, it became clear that empowering youth would be essential for long-term community wellness.
Caramel Connections Foundation now serves as a training partner for the TWIGS program — Teams with Intergenerational Support — an evidence-based youth gardening and nutrition education curriculum developed through the University of California Cooperative Extension.
TWIGS focuses on teaching young people about:
- Gardening and food systems
- Healthy eating habits
- Nutrition education
- Environmental awareness
The program uses hands-on garden learning and intergenerational mentorship, bringing together youth, adults, and elders to share knowledge and grow food together.
As trained facilitators of the TWIGS curriculum, Caramel Connections Foundation helps equip young people with the skills and confidence to make healthier choices while also becoming leaders in their communities.
This work reflects the organization’s continued evolution—from teaching families how to cook healthier meals to training the next generation of food and wellness advocates.
Signature Community Events
MLK Jr. Unity Celebration
Now in it’s 4th year, the foundation hosts a Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Celebration to honor Dr. King’s legacy of service and community empowerment. The event brings together residents, youth, and leaders in a spirit of reflection and unity while encouraging collective action toward healthier, stronger communities.
Kids in the Park Wellness Fair
The Kids in the Park Wellness Fair was created to make wellness accessible and engaging for families.
The event provides children and parents with interactive experiences focused on:
• Nutrition education
• Physical activity
• Gardening and food awareness
• Healthy lifestyle habits
By combining education with fun, the event reinforces the foundation’s belief that healthy living should be joyful and accessible to all families.
Friendsgiving
Community wellness also means ensuring that elders remain connected and celebrated.
Each fall, Caramel Connections Foundation hosts Friendsgiving gatherings for seniors, providing a space for fellowship, gratitude, and shared meals during the holiday season.
These events remind us that nourishment is not only about food; it is also about belonging.
Whole You Wellness Program
As the organization continued to grow, its work naturally expanded beyond food and nutrition into broader wellness.
The Whole You Wellness Program supports community members through education and resources focused on:
• Nutrition and healthy eating
• Mental and emotional wellness
• Physical activity
• Lifestyle balance
This 12-week program reflects the foundation’s evolving vision: supporting the whole person and the whole community.
A Decade of Growth and the Journey Ahead
Ten years ago, Caramel Connections Foundation began by teaching families how to cook healthier meals and make better food choices.
Today, that work has grown into a network of programs that nurture gardens, families, youth leaders, and community wellness. The journey has expanded from food access to food education, from cooking demonstrations to youth training, and from individual wellness to community transformation. Seeds planted over the past decade have grown into something powerful; a community rooted in nourishment, knowledge, and connection.
And the next chapter is just beginning!
